The best tips to control lymphedema in the summer!


Summer is a time for beach time , cycling, and barbecuing with friends. After a cold, dark winter, going for a walk or taking the dog for a walk around the neighborhood is something many look forward to doing. However, humidity and heat can make treating lymphedema more difficult. Compression garments can be hot and cause increased sweating and discomfort. The risk of infections may also increase with increased garden scrapes, sunburns, and insect bites.


So what's the best way for a patient to not only get through the warmer months but actually enjoy them?


Here are some important tips on how to manage lymphedema in the summer so you can stay cool with your family, friends, and pets.


Protect your skin


Your skin is the gateway to infections. Doing your best to take care of your skin to limit the risk of potential infections can keep you healthy and help you avoid or minimize breakouts at all costs. The three main protections you need in summer are against the sun, scratches and insect bites.


Solar protection

The strength of the sun is more significant as it rises higher during this season. Sunburn can cause skin damage with possible blisters and inflammation. This can cause openings in the skin and increased blood flow to an area, which could cause further swelling. Using sunscreen daily is vital for skin protection. Be sure to look for sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Sunscreen can ruin clothing, so avoid putting it on immediately after applying it. Be sure to use it on other areas of possible exposure and reapply every two hours.


Protection against scratches and cuts

Whether you love being in the garden or are an avid hiker, it's good to be on top of skin care for scrapes and cuts. Wear gloves while picking weeds or cutting stems and wear socks or long pants while walking to limit and prevent cuts. Despite taking all precautions, scrapes and cuts are still possible, and when they occur, be sure to wash the area thoroughly with soap and water. Next, put an antibiotic cream on the cut and cover it with a sterile bandage or gauze to help keep it clean and block bacteria.
